Questions and answers

What you should know about the MiGeL

What is the MiGeL?

The MiGeL is annex 2 of the Swiss health care benefits ordinance (KLV). It lists products used for examination or treatment at home or in a care home whose costs are covered by mandatory health insurance — for example incontinence material, wound dressings, walking aids or blood glucose meters.

What does the maximum reimbursement amount mean?

Every position carries a maximum reimbursement amount. It is the most the insurers reimburse under basic insurance; anything above it is borne by the insured person or the facility. SANAcheck keeps cost coverage and the remaining amount per resident.

Does it matter who applies the material?

Yes. Article 25 paragraph 2 letter b of the health insurance act covers doctor-prescribed items applied by the insured person or their relatives. Under article 25a, items applied by nursing professionals are reimbursed as well. On top of that, a separate federal rule for the reimbursement of nursing material has been in force since 1 October 2021.

How often does the list change?

The Federal Office of Public Health issues changes with a fixed effective date, usually 1 January or 1 July. Positions, amounts and limitations can change with it.

What applies to my facility?

That depends on the form of housing, the insurance and the situation. What always counts is the MiGeL of the Federal Office of Public Health in force at the time. We look at your case together in the consultation and map it in SANAcheck.
